Artist of the Week, No1 Matt Malloy

Michele Palazzi has been awarded the CIWEM environmental photographer of the year award 2013 for his image entitled ‘Gone with the Dust #02’. Palazzi, who is from Rome, Italy, was awarded £5,000 by CIWEM’s president, Paul Hillman, at a private awards ceremony at the Royal Geographical Society on 9 April 2013. His striking image shows a young boy and his sister during a sand storm in the Gobi Desert, Mongolia

Quiver Trees by Night 2, 2012. ‘The cool glow of our milky way contrasts with the warm light pollution from the nearby town of Keetmanshoop, Namibia, providing a colourful backdrop to a grove of Quiver Trees. This panorama was captured at the Quiver Tree Forest Restcamp, and covers a 230-degree view, composed of 12 exposures’

The narrow depth of field and the ‘against the light’ flare make ‘A muddy Forest pony’ a lovely image, all it needs to improve it is a clear point of focus on the eyes. The odd composition of ‘Friends in the flood’ works rather well; ‘Alone in a flooded field’ and ‘Trudging through the flood’ are both grandiose and cinematic, the perspective of these wide angle lenses coupled with the reflections in the water combine perfectly. Another quirky composition is ‘are you looking at me?’ but ideally it would include the horses front hooves! The ghostly ‘Sugarcube?’ becomes almost surreal. Searching for the Seventies: The Documerica Photography Project, is based on an archive of 22,000 photos taken by the US Environmental Protection Agency. The photo above, taken in 1974, was captioned at the time: ‘Religious fervor is mirrored on the face of a Black Muslim woman, one of some 10,000 listening to Elijah Muhammad deliver his annual Savior’s Day message in Chicago.’
